Week 10: Manga and Japanese Comics Tradition

Recently I read Battle Angle "Alita", presented by Yukito Kishiro.

Style
Yukito Kishiro is a well drawing skill artist, he is good at character's proproportion and the concept art design.



  It's not merely Yukito Kishiro good at this robot theme, there have amount comics artist drew the robot manga as well. Akila is another outstanding beautiful mange that makes in Japan. They draw a lot of details of mechanical parts and combine those elements to human body or buildings. Not matter it is love story like Chobits, or a fighting shonen mange like Gurren Lagann, or more. People just love this theme, even more, they create a style called" robot style" in Japan. People create mecha as flighting weapon.


 Character's expression

  This is another thing I want to talk about, the Micro-Expreaaion. 

How does the artist explains the content visually? 
In short, if you want to show a apple, then you choose a right position to draw the apple, that is the content selection. Go farther, what do you do, if you need to explain a "sad" emotion?


If it was Yukito Kishiro, He would use a CU shot, a impressive emotion.


She's face showing how sadness she is. Her eyes are moist. the tears almost to drop down, but not. Audience sympathize the little fragile girl, they begin to empathize with this girl.


If it was Mizuki Kawashita, the author of Strawberry 100%, she didn't do some earthshaking expression.

The heroine realizes the hero actually loves the other girl.
The heroine is pale smile, but hurt.
It is totally different as the Yukito Kishiro, not CU shot, not fighting, not angry, not tears.
Just a smile. However, for those who get into the story's audiences, it can be deadly.


The early period of Japanese mange was under the leadership of Osamu Tezuka.  He is the father of Japanese mange, created and brought a lot of milestones to mange, he was inspired by Disney and brings in to Japanese mange. He is the first person created the rough robot drawing, and the first Japanese animation maker, his "blink three frames", "talking three frames" principles still be used today. 

  However, as long as he dominates the mange industry, the young artists live in the "shade of the colossus". In fact (even perhaps unintentionally), his art style created kind of "monopoly", so that, many artists in animation industry were too influenced by him. People have criticized saying that he didn't give the creative space for young artist and is negative for them to grow.

  Nonetheless, still have a lot of excellent artist overcome with the "shade of the shadow" and found another road later.
